Text Box: Want alternative Energy? Try Pond Scum

But bubbling beneath the surface of this wave-in more ways than one-is technology that, while lacking an existing market or powerful lobby to advance its profile, may soon emerge as the most promising source of portable liquid fuels and that can be offer unique environmental benefits to the electrical generation industry.

We are talking pond scum, or algae.  A plant that for decades has been prized as a possible commodity crop based on its unparallel ability to photosynthesize solar energy into plant biomass for food. Unlike most plants, algae shares characteristics of bacteria, and its photosynthetic machinery operates much faster in converting inorganic substances into organic matter. And while plants require a lot of fuel sow and harvest and additional fertilizer and fresh water to nourish, algae can be continuously harvested from closed water-based bioreactors that require little additional replenishment other than inorganic fuel supplied in the form of waste gas.

New research suggest algae may prove even more important as a source of energy than as food. Indeed, to the growing industry of biodiesel and ethanol refiners accustomed to treating biomass and the lipids derived from it as faceless commodities, algae looks like green gold

“Refiners are not committed to any source, and the market will determine what is successful, but 10 to 15 years from now it is hard to imagine that algae won’t be a dominant source of oil for biodiesel. Right now we’re using soybean oil, because canola oil is to expensive,” says Bill Dommermuth, plant manager for Seattle Biodiesel. Soybeans can give you 50 to 60 gallons of oil per acre compared to 75 to 125 gallons for canola, but algae is almost limitless because it grows so fast, so potentially you could get 10,000 gallons per acre.

If you think your pond could provide enough algae for the counties entire SUV owners and want to check out the full story by Clifford Carlsen of CNET.NEWS @  http://news.com.com/Want+alternative+energy+Try+pond+scum/2100-11386 3-6145197.html

Message From IPPCA Senior Vice President

I feel a certain obligation as an IPPCA member, Certified Professional Pond Contractor (CPPC), and recently elected senior Vice President on the IPPCA board of directors to reveal some truths by "calling 'em how I see 'em".  I have been encouraged on numerous occasions to submit for the newsletter, with the only parameter being "something I feel strongly about".  While there are many things in the watergarden industry that are close to my heart, I thought it may be fitting to make my first personal appearance with the IPPCA newsletter,  one that strikes very close to home for all members.

It is only fitting that I give a brief history of myself so others can appreciate better my situation.  As with most installers of custom work, I am truly passionate about my trade and profession.  I joined the IPPCA initially because Dave Jones responded personally to my web request for membership within hours of submitting it.  At the time I did not know Dave but was so impressed by the research I'd done on the IPPCA and the devotion that Dave showed in that very first conversation.  I knew that the tools made available by this organization would be of great benefit for myself and the growth of my company.  I had no intentions at the time of becoming directly involved with operations or having a voice in the association.

One of the best tools made available by the IPPCA is the forum.  This is a place where just about anyone can look to professionals for tips, advice, help and the occasional laugh!  But, within this forum  lies the key to my problem.  I use the site as a reference, reading about others successes and failures to broaden my own horizons.  I even post an occasional question that always gets a response.

The thing that I find disturbing however, is the presence of a certain large corporation that admittedly is a powerful force in our industry.  On any given day there will be posts that make reference to this giant in some negative way.  I know that many things are said "tongue-in-cheek" and the references are sometimes entertaining, but they are still small digs none the less.  The most disturbing thing however is how the IPPCA forum is saturated with these constant "small digs".

We are all well aware that many members have been abused, misguided or just plain trampled on in their past experiences in the industry.  It is not surprising that there is animosity and a lingering bad taste in the mouth.  We should all now spend more time focusing on the positives of this situation.

Aquascape, Inc., is one of the primary reasons that our industry has been growing by leaps and bounds.  Their products and marketing made it possible for consumers, installers and even manufacturers to benefit from a "standard" of pond building.  By this, I only mean general construction and the use of simple, easy to use components that make a water feature more palatable to clients.

The IPPCA is about education and uniting the water garden industry.  I feel the only way we can ever achieve this goal is to put aside the desire to constantly point fingers and look for faults in an industry leader.  Our association is for open minded people.  It includes former and current CAC's, former sales reps, installers that swear by the Aquascape system, and numerous people like myself that swear allegiance to no one single manufacturer.  The one thing that would be of greatest benefit is to let sleeping dogs lie and focus all energies on the positive things in our industry.  We are admittedly a "small start-up" association, but our presence is always getting bigger.  Let's be sure that this presence is seen by others as a guiding light, not a looming shadow.  The best way to increase our members and supporters is to always put our best face forward and let everyone see that the IPPCA is truly the best, most helpful and unbiased association in the water garden industry.

Text Box:                                      What the IPPCA means to me and my pond

`-The IPPCA has become my life line for learning about my pond and fish in every aspect. From the algae to pumps. They are a group of  professionals and regular Joe’s and Jill’s dedicated to helping the industry of  Ponding. Be it Koi or Water gardening ponds. They are all willing to help each other no matter what the problem is. There is no bias, you can ask about any brand of equipment or product. It doesn’t matter they will help. They are all honest and wonderful people. To me this means I can trust what they tell me, and know I am doing the best I can for my pond and my fish that live in it. It means as a consumer I have a lot less to worry about as they are just a call or click away. It also means I have become a better person just from knowing them and learning from them. IPPCA is wonderful!

Are You Using Pointer Sites?

How do these Pointer Sites work? For a very small additional fee, another smaller, website under a second domain name that you own, "points" the way for customers, so they arrive instead at your main Web site - seamlessly and invisibly!

For example, say you are in a business that sells boats. If you own the domain names canoes.com and boats.com you are pretty lucky! In this case, use canoes as a "pointer" to your main site, boats.com. Many Internet search engines use the name of the site, and link popularity as part of their ranking methods. If someone does a search for whitewater canoes, a site such as canoes.com will be ranked higher than outdoorequipment.com because the word "canoes" is present in the name of the domain.

Having additional sites pointing at your main site shows that your site is popular, and will lead to a boost in your rankings. Also, if you have just changed your domain name, you can convert the old domain to a pointer site so that it can continue to bring traffic - and important e-mails - to your firm. There are reasonable limits with these Pointer Sites: 500 kb total server space (Web and mail files etc.) and a 500 mb monthly data transfer limit (bandwidth). At these very inexpensive prices, you'll understand why it only makes sense to pick up pointer site domain names..

Text Box: THE BASICS OF LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING AND YOUR POND
If someone were to ask me “Do you like your garden better in the daytime or, at night?”  I would have to think real hard for a fair answer.  I would end up with an answer something like this…”I think I like my garden 49% in the daytime and 51% at night.  The reason being that at night, I take advantage of the ambience that low voltage lights bring to the landscape and water garden.  The contrasts of light and dark on the landscape can be stunning on the texture of plant materials and water itself.  How many times have you noticed a watergarden lit up from the bottom, under a waterfall, which creates a ripple effect of moving water on the wall behind the waterfall?
The history of outdoor landscape lighting began with ancient civilizations harnessing fire by means of torches made of resinous wood and oil for burning.  In the early forth century A.D., Emperor Constantine illuminated the streets of ancient Rome with thousands of candles.  The middle ages saw the advent of more candles and oil burning lanterns.  Lanterns were used to illuminate gardens up to a century ago.  The lighting of the night time garden underwent a huge change with the advent of natural gas to illuminate the streets of Europe.  Natural gas was a huge success until the discovery of how to harness electricity was implemented in the 1880s.  The very first electric garden lights were crude contraptions compared to our modern day low voltage systems.
Modern professionals prefer the low voltage lights for most landscape applications due to ease of installation and cost savings due to lower electric usage.  Modern low voltage lighting systems for the garden emerged as an industry back in the late 1950s.
How easy is it to install low voltage lights?  If you connect the two wires of the fixture to the transformer, this results in the fixture “coming to life”.  The purpose of this article is to discuss the history of garden lighting.  A future installment will discuss designing your lighting system as well as a simplified approach to installing your low voltage lighting system in and around your pond.

“Meaningful Messages”

Our days are so crowded

And our hours are so few

And there’s so little time

And so much to do

That the days fly by and are over and done

Before we have even half begun

To do the things that we meant to do

But never have time to carry through…..

And how nice it would be

If we stopped to say

The things we feel in our hearts each day
